HISTORICAL CONTEXT

6 Commando embarked at Warsash on 5 June, 1944 and landed at intervals on Queen Red sector, Sword Beach from 08:40 on D-Day.

They advanced to Le Plein, taking a German battery en route, before crossing the River Orne and Caen Canal at Bénouville and continuing through to Breville.

Heavy casualties were incurred there due to sustained mortar fire from a German gun site located just outside Breville shortly after they arrived so they withdrew.

He was reported as having been killed whilst getting ready for an attack on a pill box shortly after 3 Troop had spearheaded the Commando off Sword Beach.

Desmond Adams was born on the 16th of March 1925, the son of Stanley & Daisy Adams (née England), who had been married in the September quarter of 1933 in the Registration District of Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. He was the eldest of three sons born to Stanley and Daisy.
