REMEMBERING THE NORMANDY LANDINGS TEACHER RESOURCE PACK

Developed by the Normandy Memorial Trust and the British Council, in partnership with GCHQ, this education resource marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day (6 June 2024).
The pack draws on primary source material to help pupils explore the Normandy landings, the role of Allied forces and the French Resistance, and the impact of the campaign on civilians.

As part of the British Council’s global education programme, it encourages international collaboration, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of D-Day’s lasting significance.

D-DAY LEARNING MODULE FROM THE CHURCHILL DIGITAL ARCHIVES

This dedicated learning module, developed in collaboration with the Churchill Digital Archives, provides students with access to original documents, speeches and correspondence from the Second World War.
Through carefully curated archival material, pupils gain insight into leadership, decision-making and the strategic planning behind D-Day.

The module supports enquiry-based learning and helps students engage directly with primary historical evidence.

PRE-VISIT RESEARCH AND GUIDANCE

Before visiting, students can explore the Memorial’s enhanced Digital Roll of Honour to identify a fallen serviceman — often someone from their local area.

Using guidance provided by the Trust’s researcher students can begin to investigate that individual’s life and service. Verified findings are added to the Memorial’s permanent records and credited to both the student and their school.

This phase builds a powerful personal connection, as students later stand before the name they have researched at the Memorial itself.
